Queensland Seniors Discounts and Concessions

Queensland has four types of Concession cards and many other discount offerings for Seniors. While each individual discount might seem relatively small, reducing regular household expenses can make a meaningful difference to your retirement budget over the year.
Turning 60 can be an important milestone—not only personally, but financially. For Queenslanders, reaching 60 can open the door to a range of discounts, concessions and services that can help reduce the cost of everyday living.
For retirees and those approaching retirement, these savings can be particularly valuable.
Which Seniors Card are you eligible for?
Queensland has four types of Seniors Cards, and understanding the difference is important.
1. The Queensland Seniors Card provides access to discounts at participating businesses, the free Senior Shopper service and eligibility for certain Queensland Government concessions. You must be 65 years old and work less than 35 hours a week.
2. The Seniors Card +go provides these same benefits but also incorporates a Translink Go card, making it particularly useful for seniors who use public transport in South-East Queensland.
3. If you are aged 60 or over but don't qualify for the Queensland Seniors Card, you may still be eligible for the Seniors Business Discount Card. This provides access to participating business discounts and Senior Shopper. Note: it does not provide the same government concessions as the Queensland Seniors Card.
Queensland Seniors Card – the benefits:
A) Electricity rebate – up to $399.47 a year
One of the more valuable concessions is the Queensland Electricity Rebate.
Eligible Queensland Seniors Card holders can currently receive $399.47 per year (2026), including GST, towards their domestic electricity costs. The rebate is generally applied directly to the electricity bill.
Only one electricity rebate is available per household, and there are eligibility conditions relating to the household and principal place of residence.
Importantly, you don't necessarily need to receive your electricity bill directly from an energy retailer. If you live in a retirement village, residential park, apartment complex or other arrangement where electricity is supplied through an intermediary, you may still be eligible. In these circumstances, the organisation supplying the electricity generally claims the rebate on your behalf.
Note: The Seniors Business Discount Card alone does not qualify for the Queensland Electricity Rebate.
B) Vehicle registration concession
Queensland Seniors Card holders may also be eligible for a concession on vehicle or boat registration.
The concession applies to an eligible vehicle registered in the same name as the Seniors Card holder and used mainly for their own private purposes. It is not available to holders of the Seniors Business Discount Card.
The saving can be significant. From 1 July 2026, the registration component for a four-cylinder vehicle is $192.75 for eligible concession card holders, compared with the standard registration component of $385.45. The Traffic Improvement Fee and compulsory third-party (CTP) insurance are additional and are not discounted as part of this concession.
C) Public Transport : In addition, currently (August 2026), Seniors with a valid Seniors Go Card, can travel completely free on Brisbane City Council buses, City Cats, and ferries during off-peak hours.
4. The fourth concession card is the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card offering valuable health cost concessions.
For retirees who have reached Age Pension age, and do not receive an income support payment, the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) is another concession worth investigating. Unlike the Age Pension, the CSHC has no assets test, although applicants must satisfy an income test and other eligibility requirements.
The CSHC can provide significant savings on healthcare costs, including cheaper prescription medicines through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

Note: holders of CSHC also need to a Seniors Card to receive the car registration and electricity rebates.
Don't overlook Senior Shopper
Holders of either the Seniors Card or the Seniors Business Discount Card—can also use Senior Shopper - a free service designed to help seniors obtain better prices on a range of products and services.
This can include electrical goods, whitegoods, travel, accommodation, new cars, furniture, computers, car tyres and servicing. Senior Shopper also offers discounted gift cards and e-gift cards from around 100 major retailers.
Other discounts and concessions
There are thousands of participating businesses throughout Queensland offering discounts to Seniors Card holders. These can cover dining, travel, accommodation, recreation, health and fitness, automotive services and household expenses.
Queensland Seniors Card and Seniors Card +go holders may also be eligible for government concessions covering areas such as transport, health, recreation and education. The Queensland Government's online Seniors Card directory allows you to search for discounts by location and category.
Make your retirement income go further
For someone living on a fixed retirement income, managing expenses is just as important as managing investments.
A few hundred dollars saved on electricity and vehicle registration, combined with discounts on shopping, dining, travel and other expenses, can add up over the course of a year.
If you are approaching 60, or have recently retired, it is worth checking your eligibility for these concessions. These benefits can be easy to overlook, but making the most of them can help your retirement income stretch further.
